Magelang district is part of Central Java province with Mungkin as it’s capital. It borders Temanggung to the north, Semarang and Boyolali to the east, Yogyakarta Special Region to the south, and Wonosobo and Purworejo to the west.
Magelang district is unique because the Borobudur temple, one of the 8 wonders in the world, is in Magelang district. Borobudur was built during the Syailendra dynasty is the crown jewel of Indonesia and a protected site under UNESCO. Other than Borobudur, other budhist temple are the Mendut and Pawon.
The lure of Borobudur for local and international tourist is undeniable. In addition to other attraction such as the beautiful panorama of mount Merbabu Merapi, mount Sindoro and mount Sumbing all located in Magelang district. Other mountain attraction are Kopeng, Ketep viewing post, Sekar Langit falls, Curug Silaw falls, and white water rafting on Elo and Progo river. Natural attraction can be coupled with cultural and social attraction such as: traditional dance, traditional dress, souvenir and the local delicacy.
Magelang is located on the low rise between mount Merbabu (3.141 meter), mount Merapi (2.911 meter) and mount Sumbing (3.371 meter). The Bukit Menoreh mountain range spans on the south west side of Magelang. The river Progo and it’s subsidiaries splits across the middle. Magelang district consist of 21 subdistrict.
Magelang is situated along the main highway that connects two major city Semarang and Yogyakarta. The capital of Magelang was recently moved from Magelang to Mungkid. Secang on the main highway is an intersection leading westward to Banyumas. The railway connecting Semarang and Yogyakarta is one of the oldest in Indonesia, however due to repeated damage caused by mount merapi explosion, its longer in service.
