The City of Yogyakarta is the capital and the only major city in Yogyakarta Special Region. Yogyakarta borders with Sleman to the north, Bantul and Sleman to the east and west.
Yogyakarta in general is lowland area with three major river: Gajah Wong to the east, Code in the middle, and Winongo in the west.
Yogyakarta is 32.5 Km2 wide making it the smallest district in Yogyakarta Special Region, or 1,025% of total area of the Region. Yogyakarta is made up of 14 subdistrict, 45 village. Population at this moment is at 489,000 people, population density is 15,000 people/Km2. Lies at 110°24’19” - 110°28’53” East and 7°49’26” - 70°15’24” South at an elevation of 114 meter above sea level.
The city of Yogyakarta started of as part of the Yogyakarta Sultanate according to the Giyanti aggreement (13 February 1755). Yogyakarta and Solo sultanates are the two major kingdom in 18th century Java. Prince Mangkubumi who later became Sultan Hamengkubuwono I became the first ruler of Yogyakarta. Post independence, the sultanate became the city of Yogyakarta. Several well known attribute of Yogyakarta include: revolutionary city, education city, cultural city, and tourism city.
