History recall Purworejo as land of Bagelen. The Bagelen kingdom is one of the most revered during that time. The cleric Sunan Geseng who who is the religous leader in Bagelen played important role in introducing Islam in southern Cenral Java east of Lukola river reaching as far as Yogyakarta and Magelang.
During the rise of Islamic Mataram, the Kenthol Bagelen soldiers under Sutawijaya was a force to be reckoned and made the name Bagelen famous through out Java. Sutawijaya was later given the title Panembahan Senopati.
Post Java war, the colonial government made southern Kedu or Bagelen Land into Bagelen Residency with it’s capital in Purworejo. Purworejo itself is actualy two ancient town, Kedungkebo and Brengkelan.
In the XIX century, Semawung district and Purworejo district in Bagelen Residency was under the authority of Raden Adipati Cokronegoro I. Eventually the two district merged and became the Purworejo district.
On August 1901, the Bagelen residency was disolved and merge with Kedu Residency. However Purworejo was appointed the capital of the residency.
In 1936 the colonial government merged Karanganyar, Ambal, and Kebumen into Kebumen district. Kutoarjo, Purworejo, some area of Urut Sewu/Ledok became Purworejo district. The remaining Urut Sewu/Ledok became the Wonosobo district.
For many years, Purworejo district was in the forefront in education system. Prominent national figure came from Purworejo including: WR Supratman (created the Indonesia national anthem), Jenderal Urip Sumoharjo, Jenderal Ahmad Yani, and Sarwo Eddy Wibowo.
